| Notes for U-1229 | U-1229 was en route to Maine, to land an abwehr agent (Oskar Mantel) on the 20th August 1944, when she was detected by radar from an Avenger of VC-42 SQN of the USN from the USS Bogue. At 1229 Lt(jg) A X Brokas attacked with depth charges and rockets, while U-1229 inexplicably remained surfaced. Eventually KL Zinke ordered U-1229 dived, but by now this was too late. The badly damaged boat was leaving an oil slick, and Brokas dropped sonobuoys and remained over the area while calling up reenforcements. After an hour two more Avengers and a Wildcat arrived - piloted by Lt(jg) B C Sissler, Lt(jg) M J Sherbring and Lt J B Watson.
At 1419 U-1229 could be seen about to surface. The boat's batteries were damaged and Zinke needed to surface for repairs. After an aborted attack by two of the Avengers, one of them successfully attacked U-1229, hitting it with up to 7 rockets. Men were now abandoning the boat, but another Avenger attacked again, fortunately failing to release most of its depth charges, and the one that did release was a dud. At about 1440 U-1229 sank by the bow. 18 men were killed, and 41 were rescued.
