U-156 left Lorient under the command of Werner Hartenstein on 20th Aug 1942 and returned twelve and a half weeks later to Lorient on 16th Nov 1942.
Werner Hartenstein hit three ships on this patrol, one was from convoy SL-119.-
On 27th Aug 1942 he sank the British 5,941 ton Clan Macwhirter, a member of convoy SL-119.

On the 16th Jan 1943, U-156 left Lorient under the command of Werner Hartenstein. U-156 was sunk on 8th Mar 1943. At 1900 HRS on 2nd Mar 1943 U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 9 Squadron. At 2310 HRS on 2nd Mar 1943 U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 80 Squadron. On 8th Mar 1943 in square EE 91, U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VP-53 Squadron. U-156 was destroyed in the attack.
