19.01.1942 - 17.03.1942 Second Sailing - active patrol On the 19th Jan 1942, U-156 left Lorient under the command of Werner Hartenstein and returned to Lorient on 17th Mar 1942 after just over eight weeks on patrol. Werner Hartenstein hit seven ships on this patrol, one was from convoy ON-60. On 16th Feb 1942 he sank the British 2,396 ton Oranjestad. On 16th Feb 1942 he damaged the British 4,317 ton Pedernales. On 27th Feb 1942 he sank the British 2,498 ton Macgregor, sailing with convoy ON-60. On 28th Feb 1942 he sank the American 7,017 ton Oregon.
22.04.1942 - 07.07.1942 Third Sailing - active patrol U-156 departed under Werner Hartenstein from Lorient on 22nd Apr 1942 and arrived back at Lorient on 7th Jul 1942 after nearly eleven weeks on patrol. Werner Hartenstein hit fourteen ships on this patrol. On 13th May 1942 he sank the Dutch 15 ton Letitia Porter. On 13th May 1942 he sank the Dutch 4,551 ton Koenjit. On 13th May 1942 he sank the British 6,630 ton City of Melbourne. On 15th May 1942 he sank the Norwegian 4,301 ton Siljestad. On 15th May 1942 he sank the Yugoslavian 4,382 ton Kupa. On 17th May 1942 he sank the British 5,072 ton Barrdale. On 18th May 1942 he damaged the British 8,042 ton San Eliseo. On 18th May 1942 he sank the American 4,961 ton Quaker City. On 21st May 1942 he sank the 1,668 ton Presidente Trujillo. On 25th May 1942 he damaged the American 1,190 ton USS Blakeley. On 29th May 1942 he sank the British 1,913 ton Norman Prince. On 1st Jun 1942 he sank the Brazilian 5,970 ton Alegrete. On 3rd Jun 1942 he sank the British 80 ton Lillian. On 24th Jun 1942 he sank the British 4,558 ton Willimantic. 20.08.1942 - 16.11.1942 Fourth Sailing - active patrol U-156 left Lorient under the command of Werner Hartenstein on 20th Aug 1942 and returned twelve and a half weeks later to Lorient on 16th Nov 1942. Werner Hartenstein hit three ships on this patrol, one was from convoy SL-119. On 27th Aug 1942 he sank the British 5,941 ton Clan Macwhirter, a member of convoy SL-119. On 12th Sep 1942 he sank the British 19,695 ton Laconia. On 19th Sep 1942 he sank the British 4,745 ton Quebec City.
16.01.1943 - 08.03.1943 Fifth Sailing - active patrol On the 16th Jan 1943, U-156 left Lorient under the command of Werner Hartenstein. U-156 was sunk on 8th Mar 1943. At 1900 HRS on 2nd Mar 1943 U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 9 Squadron. At 2310 HRS on 2nd Mar 1943 U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF 80 Squadron. On 8th Mar 1943 in square EE 91, U-156 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VP-53 Squadron. U-156 was destroyed in the attack.
