U-173 left Kiel under the command of Heinz-Ehler Beucke on 15th Jun 1942 and arrived at Lorient on 20th Sep 1942 after nearly fourteen weeks.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 1st Nov 1942, U-173 left Lorient under the command of Hans-Adolf Schweichel. The boat was lost on 16th Nov 1942.
Hans-Adolf Schweichel hit four ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy: One was from convoy MKF-1 and three were from convoy UGF-1.
