First Sailing - active patrol
U-188 left Kiel under the command of Siegfried Lüdden on 4th Mar 1943 and arrived at Lorient on 4th May 1943 after more than eight weeks.
On 2nd May 1943 in square BF 48, U-188 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 612 Squadron.
Siegfried Lüdden hit one ship on this patrol from convoy ON-176.
  • On 11th Apr 1943 he sank the British 1,190 ton HMS Beverley, sailing with convoy ON-176.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 30th Jun 1943, U-188 left Lorient under the command of Siegfried Lüdden and after seventeen and a half weeks arrived at Penang on 30th Oct 1943.
Siegfried Lüdden hit two ships on this patrol.
  • On 21st Sep 1943 he sank the American 7,176 ton Cornelia P Spencer.
  • On 5th Oct 1943 he damaged the Norwegian 9,977 ton Britannia.

U-188 departed under Siegfried Lüdden from Penang on 1st Jan 1944 and arrived at Bordeaux on 19th Jun 1944 after over twentyfour weeks.
Siegfried Lüdden hit seven ships on this patrol.
  • On 20th Jan 1944 he sank the British 7,122 ton Fort Buckingham.
  • On 25th Jan 1944 he sank the British 7,130 ton Fort la Maune.
  • On 26th Jan 1944 he sank the British 5,427 ton Surada.

  • On 29th Jan 1944 he sank the Greek 4,677 ton Olga E Embiricos.
