First Sailing - active patrol
U-197 left Kiel under the command of Robert Bartels on 3rd Apr 1943. On the 20th Aug 1943, U-197 was sunk.
On 20th May 1943 in square FM 22, U-197 came under attack from an aircraft of USAAF U-197 was moderately damaged by the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Robert Bartels hit four ships on this patrol.
  • On 20th May 1943 he sank the Dutch 4,763 ton Benakat.
  • On 24th Jul 1943 he sank the Swedish 9,583 ton Pegasus.
  • On 30th Jul 1943 he damaged the American 7,181 ton William Ellery.
  • On 17th Aug 1943 he sank the British 6,921 ton Empire Stanley.
