09.03.1943 - 24.09.1943
First Sailing - active patrol
U-198 left Kiel under the command of Werner Hartmann on 9th Mar 1943 and arrived at Bordeaux on 24th Sep 1943 after twentyeight and a half weeks.
At 1810 HRS on 5th Apr 1943 U-198 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 204 Squadron. U-198 was only slightly damaged in the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
At 2040 HRS on 5th Apr 1943 U-198 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 204 Squadron. U-198 was not damaged by the attack.
At 2058 HRS on 19th May 1943 in square KP 85, U-198 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 262 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
At 1943 HRS on 31st May 1943 in square KQ 77, U-198 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 262 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
Werner Hartmann hit seven ships on this patrol, two of these ships were in convoy: One was from convoy BC-2 and one was from convoy LMD-17.
  • On 17th May 1943 he sank the British 4,392 ton Northmoor, sailing with convoy LMD-17.
  • On 29th May 1943 he sank the British 5,231 ton Hopetarn.
  • On 5th Jun 1943 he sank the British 2,304 ton Dumra.
  • On 6th Jun 1943 he sank the American 7,176 ton William King.
  • On 6th Jul 1943 he sank the Greek 4,476 ton Hydraios.
  • On 7th Jul 1943 he sank the British 4,742 ton Leana.
  • On 1st Aug 1943 he sank the Dutch 8,457 ton Mangkalihat, a member of convoy BC-2.

On the 23rd Mar 1944, U-198 left Bordeaux under the command of Burkhard Heusinger von Waldegg and after two days arrived at La Pallice on 25th Mar 1944.
20.04.1944 - 12.08.1944
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-198 departed under Burkhard Heusinger von Waldegg from La Pallice on 20th Apr 1944. The boat was lost on 12th Aug 1944.
Burkhard Heusinger von Waldegg hit four ships on this patrol, one was from convoy DKA-21.
  • On 16th Jun 1944 he sank the 3,268 ton Columbine.
