13.04.1943 - 31.05.1943
First Sailing - active patrol
U-231 left Kiel under the command of Wolfgang Wenzel on 13th Apr 1943 and arrived at La Pallice on 31st May 1943 after nearly seven weeks.
On 21st Apr 1943 in square AE 91, U-231 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 190 Squadron. U-231 was not damaged by the attack.
At 0300 HRS on 22nd Apr 1943 in square AE 86, U-231 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 190 Squadron. U-231 was not damaged by the attack.
At 1229 HRS on 22nd Apr 1943 in square AE 86, U-231 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 190 Squadron. U-231 was not damaged by the attack.
On 23rd Apr 1943 in square AE 79, U-231 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-231 was not damaged by the attack.
On 21st May 1943 in square AK 79, U-231 came under attack from an aircraft of USN VC-9 Squadron. U-231 was heavily damaged in the attack.
27.07.1943 - 29.07.1943
Second Sailing
On the 27th Jul 1943, U-231 left La Pallice under the command of Wolfgang Wenzel and returned to La Pallice on 29th Jul 1943 after two days.
23.09.1943 - 24.09.1943
Third Sailing
U-231 departed under Wolfgang Wenzel from La Pallice on 23rd Sep 1943 and arrived at Bordeaux on 24th Sep 1943 after one day.
27.09.1943 - 22.11.1943
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-231 left Bordeaux under the command of Wolfgang Wenzel on 27th Sep 1943 and after eight weeks arrived at La Pallice on 22nd Nov 1943.On 16th October while south-west of Reykjavik, Wenzel responded to a call for help from U-964 which had come under air attack and was sinking. Several other boats answered the call however only U-231 was able to find any survivors. 4 men were picked up however 1 later died.
26.12.1943 - 13.01.1944
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 26th Dec 1943, U-231 left La Pallice under the command of Wolfgang Wenzel. U-231 was sunk on 13th Jan 1944.
