U-261 left Kiel under the command of Hans Lange on 8th Sep 1942. U-261 was sunk on 15th Sep 1942.

| Notes for U-261 | At 1500 on 15th Sep 1942, NW of the Butt of Lewis 58 SQN Whitley 15th Grp CC RAF (SGT B F Snell) sighted the surfaced U-261. The Whitley attacked out of the clouds, and dropped 3 D/Cs in a spot on attack - 1 D/C was reported to have hit the conning tower. U-261 started going down with her bow out of the water, the Whitley came around for a 2nd attack and dropped all remaining D/Cs on U-261 which then slid under. Debris and oil were observed. 43 crew died with U-261. Snell also died during the war.
