U-406 departed under Horst Dieterichs from St. Nazaire on 9th Aug 1942 and arrived back at St. Nazaire on 8th Oct 1942 after eight and a half weeks on patrol.

  • On 19th Aug 1942 he sank the British 7,452 ton City of Manila, sailing with convoy SL-118.

At 0200 HRS on 29th Apr 1943 in square BF 72, U-406 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. U-406 was not damaged by the attack.
