U-408 left Kiel under the command of Reinhard von Hymmen on 21st May 1942 and arrived at Skjomenfjord on 1st Jun 1942 after one and a half weeks.

On the 7th Jun 1942, U-408 left Skjomenfjord under the command of Reinhard von Hymmen and returned to Skjomenfjord on 16th Jul 1942 after five and a half weeks on patrol.
| 18.07.1942 - 20.07.1942 Third Sailing
U-408 departed under Reinhard von Hymmen from Skjomenfjord on 18th Jul 1942 and arrived at Bergen on 20th Jul 1942 after two days.
| 03.09.1942 - 05.09.1942 Fourth Sailing
U-408 left Bergen under the command of Reinhard von Hymmen on 3rd Sep 1942 and after two days arrived at Skjomenfjord on 5th Sep 1942.
| 10.09.1942 - 26.09.1942 Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 10th Sep 1942, U-408 left Skjomenfjord under the command of Reinhard von Hymmen and arrived back at Skjomenfjord over two weeks later on 26th Sep 1942.
Reinhard von Hymmen hit three ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy, all of them from convoy PQ-18.-
On 13th Sep 1942 he sank the Soviet 3,559 ton Stalingrad, sailing with convoy PQ-18.

On 13th Sep 1942 he sank the American 7,191 ton Oliver Ellsworth, a member of convoy PQ-18.

On 14th Sep 1942 he sank the British 8,939 ton Atheltemplar, part of convoy PQ-18.

U-408 departed under Reinhard von Hymmen from Narvik on 31st Oct 1942. The boat was lost on 5th Nov 1942.

| Notes for U-408 | On 5th November 1942 during a routine patrol north of Iceland, Catalina 'H' of the USN VP-84 SQN sighted and attacked U-408 with depth charges. The attack by Lt R C Millard, was accurate, with 4 depth charges falling aft of the conning tower. All hands on U-408 were lost, 45 men killed.
