U-440 left Kiel under the command of Hans Geissler on 1st Sep 1942 and arrived at Brest on 21st Sep 1942 after nearly three weeks.

On the 19th Oct 1942, U-440 left Brest under the command of Hans Geissler and returned to Brest on 13th Nov 1942 after three and a half weeks on patrol.
| 12.12.1942 - 26.01.1943 Third Sailing - active patrol
U-440 departed under Hans Geissler from Brest on 12th Dec 1942 and arrived back at Brest on 26th Jan 1943 after six and a half weeks on patrol.

U-440 left Brest under the command of Hans Geissler on 27th Feb 1943 and after just over six weeks arrived at St. Nazaire on 11th Apr 1943.
| 26.05.1943 - 31.05.1943 Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 26th May 1943, U-440 left St. Nazaire under the command of Werner Schwaff. The boat was sunk on 31st May 1943. At 1715 HRS on 31st May 1943 in square BE 68, U-440 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 201 Squadron. U-440 was destroyed in the attack. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.

| Notes for U-440 | On 31st May 1943, 201 SQN Sunderland 15th Group CC RAF (FL D M Gall) spotted U-440 outward bound North-west of Cape Finisterre, Spain. The Sunderland dived and dropped 4 D/Cs, Schwaff apparently turned into them with catastrophic results, the boat immediately went bows up and slid under. All 46 crew were lost.
