First Sailing - active patrol
U-509 left Kiel under the command of Karl-Heinz Wolff on 25th Jun 1942 and arrived at Lorient on 12th Sep 1942 after over eleven weeks.
15.10.1942 - 26.11.1942
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 15th Oct 1942, U-509 left Lorient under the command of Werner Witte and returned to Lorient on 26th Nov 1942 after six weeks on patrol.
Werner Witte hit seven ships on this patrol and all of them were in convoy, all of them from convoy SL-125.
  • On 26th Oct 1942 he damaged the British 7,705 ton Anglo Mærsk, sailing with convoy SL-125.
  • On 27th Oct 1942 he sank the British 6,148 ton Stentor, a member of convoy SL-125.
  • On 27th Oct 1942 he sank the British 7,951 ton Pacific Star, part of convoy SL-125.
  • On 28th Oct 1942 he damaged the British 5,178 ton Hopecastle, from convoy SL-125.
  • On 28th Oct 1942 he sank the British 5,283 ton Nagpore, sailing with convoy SL-125.
  • On 29th Oct 1942 he damaged the British 7,131 ton Corinaldo, a member of convoy SL-125.
  • On 30th Oct 1942 he sank the British 4,772 ton Brittany, part of convoy SL-125.
23.12.1942 - 11.05.1943
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-509 departed under Werner Witte from Lorient on 23rd Dec 1942 and arrived back at Lorient on 11th May 1943 after nearly twenty weeks on patrol.
On 7th Mar 1943 in square KY 64, U-509 came under attack from an aircraft of SAAF 25 Squadron. U-509 was not damaged by the attack.
Werner Witte hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy CA-11 and one was from convoy NC-9.
  • On 10th Feb 1943 he sank the British 4,937 ton Queen Anne, from convoy CA-11.
  • On 2nd Apr 1943 he fatally damaged the British 7,129 ton City of Baroda, sailing with convoy NC-9.

Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-509 left Lorient under the command of Werner Witte on 3rd Jul 1943. U-509 was lost on 15th Jul 1943.
