First Sailing
U-514 left Kiel under the command of Hans-Jürgen Auffermann on 12th Aug 1942 and arrived at Kristiansand on 13th Aug 1942 after one day.
15.08.1942 - 09.11.1942
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 15th Aug 1942, U-514 left Kristiansand under the command of Hans-Jürgen Auffermann and after over twelve weeks arrived at Lorient on 9th Nov 1942.
Hans-Jürgen Auffermann hit six ships on this patrol.
  • On 6th Sep 1942 he sank the British 167 ton Helen Forsey.
  • On 11th Sep 1942 he damaged the Canadian 5,458 ton Cornwallis.
  • On 15th Sep 1942 he sank the British 3,297 ton Kioto.
  • On 28th Sep 1942 he sank the Brazilian 2,730 ton Ozório.
  • On 28th Sep 1942 he fatally damaged the Brazilian 5,472 ton Lages.
  • On 12th Oct 1942 he sank the American 5,688 ton Steel Scientist.
09.12.1942 - 12.02.1943
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-514 departed under Hans-Jürgen Auffermann from Lorient on 9th Dec 1942 and arrived back at Lorient on 12th Feb 1943 after over nine weeks on patrol.
Hans-Jürgen Auffermann hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy: One was from convoy TM-1 and one was from convoy UGS-4.
  • On 3rd Jan 1943 he damaged the British 8,093 ton British Vigilance, sailing with convoy TM-1.
  • On 27th Jan 1943 he sank the American 7,177 ton Charles C Pinckney, a member of convoy UGS-4.
15.04.1943 - 22.05.1943
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-514 left Lorient under the command of Hans-Jürgen Auffermann on 15th Apr 1943 and returned over five weeks later to Lorient on 22nd May 1943.
At 0349 HRS on 17th Apr 1943 U-514 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 172 Squadron. U-514 was not damaged by the attack.
At 1428 HRS on 17th Apr 1943 U-514 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 10 Squadron. U-514 was not damaged by the attack.
On 19th May 1943 in square BE 65, U-514 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 224 Squadron.
01.07.1943 - 08.07.1943
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 1st Jul 1943, U-514 left Lorient under the command of Hans-Jürgen Auffermann. U-514 was lost on 8th Jul 1943.
