U-523 left Kiel under the command of Werner Pietzsch on 9th Feb 1943 and arrived at Lorient on 16th Mar 1943 after five weeks.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 22nd May 1943, U-523 left Lorient under the command of Werner Pietzsch and returned to Lorient on 26th May 1943 after four days on patrol.
At 1122 HRS on 24th May 1943 in square BF 45, U-523 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 10 OTU Squadron. U-523 was heavily damaged in the attack.
