Many thanks to Arthur Gaved who writes:

I was a Submarine Detector aboard H.M.S. Venus. On the morning of the 30th January 1944 I went up on deck to get some air. I was quite alone and far aft on the starboard side and gazing at the convoy when to my amazement a periscope surfaced at a distance (I judged) of only 200ft. I immediately rushed to the nearest telephone to contact the Bridge and reported a periscope at Green 160. As my action station was the Captain's Messenger I ran to the Bridge. The loudspeaker from the Asdic cabinet had been turned on and I could hear a good echo, yes, really good!

I was quite astounded that a submarine would put up its periscope so near the tail end of a destroyer. Later I thought how poor the operators of our Asdic were as they had allowed this vessel inside the screen and had no knowledge of its proximity. It was sheer chance that I had been at that position on deck when this happened.

We pursued this submarine for not less than 4 hours. She went very deep and we eventually stopped to listen. Then our Asdics woke up as the noise of a torpedo was heading in our direction. The Captain - much respected by the sailors of the lower deck - gave an order I was never to hear again. From stopped to "Full ahead both" ! Our stokers must have been well aware of what was happening as the whole ship was shuddering as the revolutions were piled on. Then followed a report from the stern that a torpedo had been seen tracking nearby. This incident was recorded as a probable sunk.

Thank you Arthur for sharing your recollections.
