Notes for U-623
While flying escort duties for convoy ON-166 North of the Azores, 120 SQN Liberator of 15th Group CC RAF (SL D J Isted) saw a U-boat. When diving out of cloud Isted saw a second boat (U-91) but continued the attack on the first target, dropping 6 D/Cs. U-623 seemed to be slow in diving, the Liberator circled around for a 2nd attack, gunning the still visible conning tower. Finally the boat submerged, 2 escorts sent to investigate found 2 large oil slicks. 46 men were lost with U-623. U-91 had already dived and escaped.
