25.02.1943 - 10.04.1943
First Sailing - active patrol
U-666 left Kiel under the command of Herbert Engel on 25th Feb 1943 and arrived at St. Nazaire on 10th Apr 1943 after over six weeks.
At 1015 HRS on 19th Mar 1943 in square AL 48, U-666 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 220 Squadron. U-666 was only slightly damaged in the attack.
Herbert Engel hit one ship on this patrol from convoy SC-122.
  • On 19th Mar 1943 he damaged the Greek 5,234 ton Carras, sailing with convoy SC-122.
06.05.1943 - 09.07.1943
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 6th May 1943, U-666 left St. Nazaire under the command of Herbert Engel and returned to St. Nazaire on 9th Jul 1943 after just over nine weeks on patrol.
At 1028 HRS on 9th May 1943 in square BE 69, U-666 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 58 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak and the aircraft was destroyed.
At 1210 HRS on 9th May 1943 in square BE 69, U-666 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 10 OTU Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
31.08.1943 - 16.10.1943
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-666 departed under Herbert Engel from St. Nazaire on 31st Aug 1943 and arrived back at St. Nazaire on 16th Oct 1943 after six and a half weeks on patrol.
Herbert Engel hit one ship on this patrol from convoy ON-202.
  • On 23rd Sep 1943 he sank the British 1,370 ton HMS Itchen, a member of convoy ON-202.
16.12.1943 - 18.12.1943
Fourth Sailing
U-666 left St. Nazaire under the command of Ernst Wilberg on 16th Dec 1943 and after two days arrived at Lorient on 18th Dec 1943.
25.12.1943 - 10.02.1944
Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 25th Dec 1943, U-666 left Lorient under the command of Ernst Wilberg. U-666 was sunk on 10th Feb 1944.
