Bag's maiden voyage was in 1913, from Bremen to Buenos Aires (via Lisboa - Rio de Janeiro - Montevideo). In 1917 while in Recife she was confiscated and incorporated to Lloyd Brasileiro Navigation Company, Rio de Janeiro, and renamed
Bag.
Before the second world war the ship worked the route between Santos and Hamburg, but after Brazil declared war on the Axis Powers the Bag switched to a coastal route. The Bagé's last voyage to Europe was in 1942 after Brazil cut diplomatic relationship with the Axis-Powers, when she transported Italian and German diplomats to Lisbon to be exchanged with Brazilian diplomats.
A local newspaper (1943) states there were 108 crew and 30 passengers on board. The number of casualties mentioned in most of the Brazilian sources is different: 28 total (20 passengers and 8 crew) and other sources claim 48 crew and 87 passengers lost. The master, Arthur Guimares, was one of the casualties.
