After the attack on the Sun U-506's next victim was this vessel.� One minute 14 seconds after having fired a spread of two torpedoes at the ship the U-boat observed a hit and saw the tanker proceeding slowly.�� U-506 however retired without finishing her off.� 18 of the 38 man crew died in the attack.� Twenty sailors and the entire 7 man Armed Guard were rescued by the shrimp boats Defender, Pioneer� and Viscali (and a 4th unnamed craft).� The USCG tug Tuckahoe (WYT-89) aided by the civilian tug Baranca towed the ship to Southwest Pass. She subsequently� returned to service as St. James.
