U-66 fired a total of five torpedoes. Three of them were evaded by St. Anselm, two suffered from a pistol failure and did not detonate. The sixth torpedo fired at 05:59 CET finally struck the target, causing the ship to sink in 15 minutes.

The Master and 17 survivors were rescued by the British armed merchant cruiser HMS Moreton Bay (F.11) (Capt. C.C. Bell) and landed at Freetown. Fifteen survivors were rescued by the Spanish ship Tom and landed at Buenos Aires. Thirty-four men were lost.
