| Operations information for U-22 | 26.08.1939 - 09.09.1939 First Sailing - active patrol
U-22 left Memel under the command of Werner Winter on 26th Aug 1939 for operations off the Polish coast and arrived at Kiel on 9th Sep 1939 after two weeks.
| 27.09.1939 - 03.10.1939 Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 27th Sep 1939, U-22 left Kiel under the command of Werner Winter for operations off Norway and returned to Kiel on 3rd Oct 1939 after six days on patrol.
| 15.11.1939 - 24.11.1939 Third Sailing - active patrol
U-22 departed under Karl-Heinrich Jenisch from Kiel on 15th Nov 1939 for operations NE of Scotland and arrived back at Kiel on 24th Nov 1939 after just over one week on patrol.
Karl-Heinrich Jenisch hit two ships on this patrol, one was from convoy IFC.-
On 18th Nov 1939 he sank the British 345 ton Wigmore, sailing with convoy IFC.

On 18th Nov 1939 he sank the British 500 ton Parkhill.
Until recently U-18 had been credited with the sinking of Wigmore on this patrol. However re-examination of primary sources by Roger Griffiths and Jan-Olof Hending leaves little doubt that in fact U-22 should be credited with the sinking. Many thanks to Roger and Jan-Olof for their great work.
| 13.12.1939 - 24.12.1939 Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-22 left Kiel under the command of Karl-Heinrich Jenisch on 13th Dec 1939 for operations NE of Scotland and returned one and a half weeks later to Kiel on 24th Dec 1939.
U-22 laid mines on this patrol. These mines were hit by 4 ships. The 1,877 ton Swedish Mars was sunk by a mine on 20th Dec 1939. The 534 ton British HMS Loch Doon was sunk by a mine on 25th Dec 1939. The 1,080 ton Danish Hanne was sunk by a mine on 28th Dec 1939. The 1,487 ton British Eston was sunk by a mine on 28th Jan 1940.
| 15.01.1940 - 24.01.1940 Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 15th Jan 1940, U-22 left Kiel under the command of Karl-Heinrich Jenisch for operations off Moray Firth and arrived at Wilhelmshaven on 24th Jan 1940 after just over one week.
Karl-Heinrich Jenisch hit two ships on this patrol.-
On 21st Jan 1940 he sank the British 1,475 ton HMS Exmouth.

On 21st Jan 1940 he sank the Danish 1,469 ton Tekla.
| 08.02.1940 - 25.02.1940 Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-22 departed under Karl-Heinrich Jenisch from Wilhelmshaven on 8th Feb 1940 for operations E of the Orkneys and returned to Wilhelmshaven on 25th Feb 1940 after two and a half weeks on patrol.
| 20.03.1940 - 27.03.1940 Seventh Sailing
U-22 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Karl-Heinrich Jenisch on 20th Mar 1940 for operations E of the Orkneys. The boat was declared missing after 27th Mar 1940.
Karl-Heinrich Jenisch hit one ship on this patrol.-
On 21st Mar 1940 he sank the Norwegian 1,267 ton Svinta.

| Notes for U-22 | U-22 went missing somewhere in the North Sea or the Skagerrak. All 27 crew were lost. There have been various theories advanced about its loss. One is that it was sunk by the French submarine Orphée, but this was denied by the French. The other is that U-22 was sunk by a mine in Jammer Bay, North Denmark. The loss of U-22 remains unexplained.
