U-403 left Kiel under the command of Heinz-Ehlert Clausen on 23rd Feb 1942 and arrived at Helgoland on 26th Feb 1942 after three days.

Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 1st Mar 1942, U-403 left Helgoland under the command of Heinz-Ehlert Clausen and after two and a half weeks arrived at Narvik on 19th Mar 1942.

Third Sailing
U-403 departed under Heinz-Ehlert Clausen from Narvik on 23rd Mar 1942 and arrived at Harstad on the same day.

Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-403 left Harstad under the command of Heinz-Ehlert Clausen on 4th Apr 1942 and returned two and a half weeks later to Harstad on 21st Apr 1942.
Heinz-Ehlert Clausen hit one ship on this patrol from convoy PQ-14.

Tenth Sailing - active patrol
U-403 left Trondheim under the command of Heinz-Ehlert Clausen on 9th Jan 1943 and after seven and a half weeks arrived at Brest on 2nd Mar 1943.
On 6th Feb 1943 in square BC 15, U-403 came under attack from an aircraft of RCAF 5 Squadron. U-403 was moderately damaged by the attack.
Heinz-Ehlert Clausen hit one ship on this patrol from convoy ONS-165.
  • On 19th Feb 1943 he sank the Greek 5,961 ton Zeus, a member of convoy ONS-165.
19.04.1943 - 31.05.1943
Eleventh Sailing
On the 19th Apr 1943, U-403 left Brest under the command of Heinz-Ehlert Clausen and arrived back at Brest on 31st May 1943 after six weeks.
At 1841 HRS on 10th May 1943 in square CE 24, U-403 came under attack from an aircraft of FAA 811 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
At 1631 HRS on 14th May 1943 in square BD 65, U-403 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 86 Squadron.
13.07.1943 - 18.08.1943
Twelfth Sailing - active patrol
U-403 departed under Karl-Franz Heine from Brest on 13th Jul 1943. The boat was lost on 18th Aug 1943.
