U-409 left Kiel under the command of Hanns-Ferdinand Massmann on 18th Aug 1942 and arrived at Brest on 9th Sep 1942 after just over three weeks.

On the 13th Oct 1942, U-409 left Brest under the command of Hanns-Ferdinand Massmann and returned to Brest on 5th Nov 1942 after over three weeks on patrol.
Hanns-Ferdinand Massmann hit two ships on this patrol and both of them were in convoy, both of them were from convoy SL-125.-
On 30th Oct 1942 he sank the British 6,373 ton Silverwillow, sailing with convoy SL-125.

On 1st Jun 1943 in square CG 94, U-409 came under attack from an aircraft of RAF 48 Squadron. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft. On 6th Jun 1943 in square CH 75, U-409 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft. The boat defended itself with flak without destroying the aircraft.
