| Notes for U-476 | On 24th May 1944 north-west of Trondheim at 0716 Hrs, a 210 SQN Catalina of 18 Grp CC RAF (Capt F W L Maxwell SAAF) sighted a surfaced U-Boat. As they closed for attack, U-476 put up a strong flak defence, yet Maxwell dropped 6 D/Cs. The U-Boat circled around and slowly went down by the stern, lingering in a bows up attitude. U-990 and U-276 came to the rescue, between them they saved 21 crew including the commander. U-990 sent a torpedo into U-476 to finish her off. Meanwhile U-276 suffered 3 casualties during an air attack while rescuing crew of U-476.
