On 20 May 1941 at 18:36 CET U-98 attacked a '10,000 tons' freighter in Grid AJ 3455. The attack was a failure but the boat followed the ship in southern direction into Grid AJ 6252. There, on 21 May, U-98 attacked again.
This time a hit was observed abaft the funnel, there was no detonation column. The ship sank 33 minutes later, stern first. The master, 54 crew and 1 gunner were rescued by the US patrol vessel USS GENERAL GREENE, WPC-140 (200 tons), and landed at St. John's. 19 crew and 3 gunners were lost.
