First Sailing - active patrol
U-4 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Harro von Klot-Heydenfeldt on 4th Sep 1939 for operations SW of Norway and arrived back at Wilhelmshaven one and a half weeks later on 14th Sep 1939.
19.09.1939 - 29.09.1939
Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 19th Sep 1939, U-4 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Harro von Klot-Heydenfeldt for operations in the Skagerrak and after one and a half weeks arrived at Kiel on 29th Sep 1939.
Harro von Klot-Heydenfeldt hit three ships on this patrol.
  • On 22nd Sep 1939 he sank the Finnish 2,262 ton Martti Ragnar.
  • On 23rd Sep 1939 he sank the Finnish 1,361 ton Walma.
  • On 24th Sep 1939 he sank the Swedish 1,510 ton Gertrud Bratt.
16.03.1940 - 29.03.1940
Third Sailing - active patrol
U-4 departed under Hans-Peter Hinsch from Kiel on 16th Mar 1940 for operations S of Norway and arrived at Wilhelmshaven on 29th Mar 1940 after nearly two weeks.
04.04.1940 - 14.04.1940
Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-4 left Wilhelmshaven under the command of Hans-Peter Hinsch on 4th Apr 1940 for operations off Norway and returned one and a half weeks later to Wilhelmshaven on 14th Apr 1940.
Hans-Peter Hinsch hit one ship on this patrol.
  • On 10th Apr 1940 he sank the British 1,090 ton HMS Thistle.

Notes for U-4
U-4 was decommissioned at Gotenhafen on 1st August 1944. During 1945 it was used for spare parts before being captured on 29th March 1945 by Soviet forces.
