U-18 left Memel under the command of Max-Hermann Bauer on 30th Aug 1939 for operations off Poland and arrived at return on 7th Sep 1939 after just over one week.

14.09.1939 - 24.09.1939 Second Sailing - active patrol
On the 14th Sep 1939, U-18 left Kiel under the command of Max-Hermann Bauer for operations in the North Sea and after one and a half weeks arrived at return on 24th Sep 1939.

02.10.1939 - 19.10.1939 Third Sailing - active patrol
U-18 departed under Max-Hermann Bauer from Kiel on 2nd Oct 1939 for operations around the Orkneys and arrived at return on 19th Oct 1939 after two and a half weeks.U-18 took part in U-47's operation into Scapa Flow by transmitting misleading radio messages intended to give the impression that Prien had already safely left the area.

15.11.1939 - 22.11.1939 Fourth Sailing - active patrol
U-18 left Kiel under the command of Max-Hermann Bauer on 15th Nov 1939 for operations NE of Scotland and after one week arrived at return on 22nd Nov 1939.
Until recently U-18 had been credited with the sinking of Wigmore on this patrol. However re-examination of primary sources by Roger Griffiths and Jan-Olof Hending leaves little doubt that in fact U-22 should be credited with the sinking. Many thanks to Roger and Jan-Olof for their great work.

08.01.1940 - 26.01.1940 Fifth Sailing - active patrol
On the 8th Jan 1940, U-18 left Kiel under the command of Ernst Mengersen for operations in the North Sea and arrived at return on 26th Jan 1940 after two and a half weeks.
Ernst Mengersen hit one ship on this patrol.-
On 23rd Jan 1940 he sank the Norwegian 1,085 ton Varild.

11.02.1940 - 24.02.1940 Sixth Sailing - active patrol
U-18 departed under Ernst Mengersen from Wilhelmshaven on 11th Feb 1940 for operations around the Shetlands and Norway and after nearly two weeks arrived at return on 24th Feb 1940.

26.05.1943 - 09.06.1943 Seventh Sailing - active patrol
U-18 left Konstanza under the command of Karl Fleige on 26th May 1943 and arrived at return on 9th Jun 1943 after two weeks. On 4th Jun 1943 in square CL 96, U-18 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft.

16.06.1943 - 22.07.1943 Eighth Sailing - active patrol
On the 16th Jun 1943, U-18 left Konstanza under the command of Karl Fleige and after just over five weeks arrived at return on 22nd Jul 1943. At 0451 HRS on 28th Jun 1943 in square CL 93, U-18 came under attack from an unidentified aircraft.

21.08.1943 - 24.09.1943 Ninth Sailing - active patrol
U-18 departed under Karl Fleige from Konstanza on 21st Aug 1943 and arrived at return on 24th Sep 1943 after nearly five weeks.
Karl Fleige hit two ships on this patrol.-
On 29th Aug 1943 he sank the Soviet 400 ton TSC-11 Dzhalita.

On 30th Aug 1943 he damaged the Soviet 56 ton SKA-0132.

27.10.1943 - 24.11.1943 Tenth Sailing - active patrol
U-18 left Konstanza under the command of Karl Fleige on 27th Oct 1943 and after four weeks arrived at return on 24th Nov 1943.
Karl Fleige hit one ship on this patrol.-
On 18th Nov 1943 he damaged the Soviet 7,745 ton Josif Stalin.

29.01.1944 - 29.02.1944 Eleventh Sailing - active patrol
On the 29th Jan 1944, U-18 left Konstanza under the command of Karl Fleige and arrived at return on 29th Feb 1944 after four and a half weeks.

25.03.1944 - 27.04.1944 Twelfth Sailing - active patrol
U-18 departed under Karl Fleige from Konstanza on 25th Mar 1944 and after more than four weeks arrived at return on 27th Apr 1944.
